Why is that we feel compelled to spend hours a day a gym to achieve results that we
could get in 30 minutes or less? I think it is because we have been conditioned to feel
that if we aren’t spending a long time in a sweaty gym somewhere then we are not
obsessing over our bodies enough. This is of course ludicrous, but then again a lot
of what we do is that way. If we were logical thinking athletes we would never have
drifted away from the ultra-efficient workout method of using kettlebells put forth by the
Russians so many years ago.
To fully understand just how we are wasting so much time in the gym we must first look
at the average gym routine. For those of us who see working out as a hobby and like to
read about it, talk about it, worry about it etc, it is quite likely that we average two hours
a day or more at the gym. This is because we hit the weights for close to an hour, then
we warm up, stretch out with some rudimentary yoga and dynamic stretching, do our
core workout, and then finally do cardio running, biking or rowing for a half hour or so.
By the time we shower and drive to and from the gym this can take four hours out of our
day!
Crazy Russian Weightlifters Blew My Mind
If you cringed while reading that last paragraph because you know it describes you, don’t
fret, I was once in the exact same position. Then one time I seen this group of Russian
wrestlers (I sometimes dabble in MMA) doing some intense workouts with these things
that looked like someone had taken a cannonball and then put a thick handle on it. I
asked if they wouldn’t mind showing me a thing or two. It felt awkward at first, but I
eventually got used to it. When I got home I researched everything I could on kettlebells
and found out that a lot of athletes had started using them for training.
The absolute best thing about kettlebells is that all the exercises you do with them are
dynamic. That means you don’t have to just resign yourself to sitting there and grunting
out reps on that sweaty old bench press. Instead you will be swinging, chucking,
squatting, and jumping your way to success. If you look into kettlebell exercises you will
see that you are building strength throughout your whole body with the exercises and not
just one body part at a time like we grew up doing. This is so important for two reasons.
The first reason is that it is far better for your athletic performance for your muscles to be
used to working together. You don’t just use one body part ever when you are playing
sports. The second reason is that if you could do three different types of weight lifting
sets all at the same time wouldn’t you? Of course you would, imagine how much time
this is saving.
Don’t Continue To Ignore Kettlebells
Not only do kettlebells save time on strength building, but on time formerly spent doing cardiovascular activities as well. I’m not saying you should never go for a run again, but I guarantee that the intense nature of kettlebell exercises will get your heart rate up for an extended period of time and that aerobic activity is what you’re really after anyway. Get your life back and buy a set of kettlebells for yourself today.
